Stage 02 of 04Road bike and cruiser finance
Whether it is a naked, a sports bike or a cruiser, the same few questions shape the deal.
What shapes a motorbike loan
Lenders generally look at the bike, the amount, the term and your situation. Newer bikes tend to give lenders more comfort than older ones, and some lenders set age limits for the bike at the end of the term. Policies differ, so check before you fall for a particular bike.
Sports and performance bikes
Higher-performance bikes can attract higher insurance premiums, particularly for younger or newer riders. Get an insurance quote for the exact model before agreeing to a repayment, so the full monthly cost is no surprise.
Cruisers and tourers
Cruiser buyers often add custom parts, screens, bags or exhausts. Remember to tell your insurer about modifications; undisclosed changes can cause trouble at claim time. See our checklist for items that commonly get forgotten.
First bike or learner-approved
If you hold a learner or restricted licence, your state or territory will limit which bikes you can ride. Check your road authority's approved list before you shop, rather than after.
Keep the term sensible
A longer term lowers the repayment but usually means paying more in interest, and bikes can lose value faster than the loan balance falls. ASIC MoneySmart has calculators you can use to test different terms.
